The Herbarium group works mainly at the study of the higher plants flora of Baikal Siberia and the processes of its anthropogenic transformation, both the introduction of alien species and the reduction of rare (including relict) ones. The staff of the Group takes part in the work on compiling Red Data Books of different levels. The Group carries out complex works on the study and conservation of rare plant species. Within these works the Group searches for and maps their locations, studies the status and monitors populations, studies biology, assesses necessary conservation measures, selects material for conservation and rehabilitation, supports a seed bank (with the quality control and the regular assessment of their germination) supports a living collection (including the rock garden for petrophytes), carries out reintroduction works and monitors their results. The Group also studies the process of flora adventitization of Baikal Siberia. The Group carries out the studies on chromosome numbers of the flora species of Baikal Siberia. The staff finds out molecular phylogenetic interactions of species formed in the process of adaptation and microevolution of plant species.
