Abstract

Revolutionary achievements of higher spatiotemporal resolution and much-improved sensitivity in a confocal fluorescence microscopy at the turn of the century allowed visualizing dynamic events at the single-mitochondrion level. Zorov et al. (2000) revealed that short-term reactive oxygen species (ROS) bursting triggered abrupt mitochondrial inner membrane depolarization and permeability transition induction in rat cardiac myocytes. This phenomenon named mitochondrial ‘ROS-induced ROS release’ (Zorov et al., 2000) are still hotly debated in literature up to raising doubts in its existence at all. Using the same fluorescent indicators (DCF and TMRM) in wheat coleoptile cells, we detected that the temporal relationships between changes in their fluorescent intensities had as ‘mirror’ as asynchronic characters indicated on complex nature of the mitochondrial dynamic phenomena.
